Kathy Sendall's Top 10- What's Yours?

Recently at a WXN Breakfast in Calgary, 2007 WXN Top 100 Hall of Fame inductee and Corporate Director Kathleen Sendall was interviewed by WXN founder, Pamela Jeffery as they delved into a variety of questions. We think Kathy’s ‘Top 10’ list makes pretty good sense and is also a great conversation starter. Here are Kathy’s ‘Top 10’:

1. Never give up the search for the perfect mascara.

2. Never lose your sense of humour and ability to laugh, especially at yourself.

3. Listen - learn to keep your mouth shut and control your temper.

In 1890, when explorer Ernest Shackleton was looking for men to join him on the first expedition of the Antarctic, he placed the following ad:Â “Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful. Honor and recognition in case of success.”

It was brutally honest and that was the point.

Ask almost anyone what they value in others and they will more than likely say honesty, responsibility, integrity, compassion. Ask almost any leader in any geography in any industry in any sector what their organization’s core values are and they too will list those same character traits. So it would seem that this widely accepted shortlist of how we all should and would like to behave guides the actions of most people and businesses around the globe, regardless of culture and time.

Clearly, that’s not happening.

Whether intentionally set or not, company values play a significant role in defining an organization’s culture and expectations in terms of employee behaviour. Without them, actions appear random and ambiguous, with no consistency in message and long term direction for the company.

But when values such as integrity, empowerment, entrepreneurship, accountability, teamwork and many others are truly integrated into a company’s culture and well communicated across the entire organization, motivation is high.
